Buy vs build: an argument for best-of-breed solution management

In case you hadn't already noticed, we live in a deeply connected society. More than just a simple truism - this important fact should be actively informing the products you build and the way you do business. Still, it's amazing how quickly some clients turn to expensive, brand-name solutions for their marketing, development and management needs. Often, some out-of-the-box thinking and a bit of elbow grease can do the job just as well.

This is made possible largely due to our API economy and the modular nature of existing products. Integration is a pressing priority for many providers, and platforms that don't allow for information exchange limit their customer's workflows and risk falling prey to smaller industry disruptors. This opens up opportunities for you to create your own systems using lightweight solutions that save you money and keep you nimble.

When piecing together your systems from scratch, you don't have the luxury of picking and choosing your capabilities. You'll find yourself with a specific goal in mind and a pressing need to find the fastest route to your goal. There's far less chance of scope creep due to the urgency that comes with a DIY mentality.

Moreover, it's a fallacy to say that large enterprise solutions are easier and faster to implement than bespoke best-of-breed solutions, even when you're working with a brand-name provider. In a previous job of mine, the team spent over 12 months trying to upgrade an integration of our marketing software, only to find out that the result was less flexible than the original.

It's amazing what you can achieve with integration platforms like Zapier and IFTTT. Before you spend a small fortune on an enterprise solution, make sure you've thought seriously about patching the gap yourself.

Here at the Studio, we frequently provided low-cost, robust solutions and integrations for a fraction of the cost of heavy-weight enterprise solutions. If you’d like to learn a little but about how we do it, drop us a line whenever you have time to chat. We're not ones to brag, but we've saved our clients a lot of time and wasted energy!
